What is a Mine-spec Vehicle?

A mine-spec vehicle is a light or heavy vehicle that has been upgraded and adapted with specialized safety equipment to meet the strict requirements and regulations of a region’s mining and heavy industrial sites. For example, in South Africa a mine-spec vehicle must adhere to the South African Mine Health and Safety Act.​​​

Different Types of Mine-spec Vehicles

There are many types of mine-spec vehicles, tailored to whether they operate underground or on the surface and what their purpose is. Essential Features of a Mine-spec Vehicle

ROPS / FOPS 

This is site-specific, but in general a mine specific vehicle is fitted with:

  • Roll-over protection / Falling Object Protective Structure (ROPS/FOPS)

  • Brake system upgrades (Fail safe brakes)

  • Suspension upgrades depending on vehicle purpose

  • Communication/Intercom systems

ROPS (Roll-Over Protective Structure) and FOPS (Falling-Object Protective Structure) are safety systems designed to protect vehicle occupants in hazardous mining environments.

  • ROPS helps prevent serious injury if the vehicle rolls over. RBF Vehicle Safety & Solutions are a HALO™ ROPS licensed reseller and certified installer. 

  • FOPS shields occupants from falling rocks, tools, or debris. FOPS are predominantly installed on underground mine-spec vehicles. 

Together, ROPS/FOPS provide critical protection for mine-spec vehicles operating on both surface and underground sites.
